Database News: pgrust

A little while ago Michael Malis caught some attention with his article pgrust: Rebuilding Postgres in Rust with AI. He introduced pgrust, a modern Postgres rewrite in Rust with the help of AI.

A couple of weeks later he shared in Postgres in Rust: three dead ends before we passed 100% of the regression suite that pgrust passed 100% of the regression suite and the amount of money that was needed to build the project:

So far we’ve put in $200k into pgrust-fast on top of the $100k we put into pgrust-idiomatic.

This week he wrote about Version 0.2 and the improvements that he implemented: Rebuilding Postgres for 300x faster analytics: batching, operator fusion, and SIMD.

Overall, I find it interesting and impressive that there is an effort to completely rewrite Postgres and to modernize some design decisions. Although I am quite still skeptical. Looking at the GitHub issues, it seems like there is still a long road ahead, but I am super curious to see how it will turn out.
